Shana & Julia’s Wedding
For this project, I was required to put my lettering skills to use for a client’s wedding bomboniere - my objective was to hand-letter the initials ‘S & J’ onto 140 mini terracotta pots, as well as the names of all the guests onto saucers for my client’s wedding.
I came up with a few options on paper for the initials, of which my client preferred the design with a mono-weighted stroke and no extra swashes. I then created a stencil by using a box cutter to go over the pencil drawing and carve out the letters - this helped make the workflow for the pots go as efficiently as possible and allowed for more consistent results.
After carving out the letters, I cut around the ‘S & J’ design so that the piece of paper was small enough to place onto the pots and draw the template. Once all 140 pots had the pencil outline completed, it was time to use a 0.7mm white POSCA marker. I lightly erased over the pencil work so that it didn’t show through after I applied the ink, then traced over the outline with the marker. After the ink had dried up, I retraced over the initials to thicken the white strokes and make the design stand out clearer.
The process for the guest names on the saucers was similar to the pots, however I couldn’t use any custom-made stencils for these! Instead, I drew straight onto the saucers with a pencil and created a consistent, flowing lettering style that matched the ‘S & J’ initials.
Once all 140 pots and 140 saucers had been completed, I separated each item with bubble wrap, safely boxed them up and delivered them to my client, ready for the pots to be filled for the wedding!
